FAQ

Q1 The Dr X Kit replaces the electronics within the OEM Taillight?

A1 YES, the Dr X Kit circuit board directly replaces the board within the OEM taillight using same mounting holes and screws.

Q2 Is the Dr X Kit DOT approved?

A2 The Dr X Kits are designed to MEET DOT specifications but are not approved or qualified for DOT use.  This is achieved by maintaining and exceeding manufacturer LED specifications for intensity, wavelength (color) and placement/count of LEDs.  In addition, the Dr X Kit installs within the OEM taillight housing for full optical compliance.

Q3 Is the Dr X 2003/04/05 R6 Kit brighter than OEM?

A3 YES, the Dr X Kit 2003/04/05 R6 Kit uses the same type of SuperFlux LEDs as the OEM taillight but much much brighter.  The Dr X Kit LEDs are 5 to 10 times brighter than red LEDs typically found on other aftermarket kits.  The increased intensity improves contrast for increased rearward visibility and signaling intention.  Click here to view a comparison image...

Q4 Why not use YELLOW LEDs for L/R Signals?

A4 Due to optical limitations with the OEM lens, placing additional yellow LEDs would tend to scatter the light and reduce the amount of light power that is directed rearward.  This drastically reduces signaling visibility from a distance.  There are no requirements by law that signals must be YELLOW in North America.  In fact most domestic vehicles use red for rear signals.

From a safety perspective, LED intensity and ON/OFF contrast is the predominant factor for signal visibility and intention (not color).  The Dr X 2003/04/05 R6 Kit employs red LEDs that are among the brightest on the market.  Each red LED has the equivalent light power of 10 or more yellow LEDs typically found on other aftermarket kits.

Q5 How is the lens cut and then reattached?

A5 VFX designers and technicians have developed specialized equipment and jigs to cut open each taillight.  This method ensures a professional cut with little or no damage to the lens or taillight body.  Once the electronics have been replaced, the lens is reattached using a specialized plastic adhesive specifically developed for the Dr X Kit series.  The plastic adhesive (VPAD-010) is durable and impermeable to elements such as water, gasoline, oil, road grime and temperature fluctuations.

VFX does not recommend the use of silicone to reattach the lens.  Silicone does not adhere to plastic well and will eventually compromise the integrity of the seal - leaving the electronics susceptible to the elements.

Q6 How do i hook up the alarm trigger wire?

A6 Locate a +12V constant output wire on your alarm system.  Most alarms dedicate an output wire for hook up to turn signals or a taillight.  Ensure that the output wire is capable of handling a 2.5 Amp load.  If current exceeds output rating use an external relay.

Q7 Will there be an X-treme version of the Dr X Kit 2003/04/05 R6?

A7 Not likely.  An X-treme version with all the animations was not produced due to optical limitations with the lens and close placement of the LEDs (difficult to produce clear and sharp animations).

Q8 If i remove the rear turn signals, will i encounter FAST FLASH?

A8 NO. The Universal Flasher Relay is included with each Dr X Kit 2003/04/05 R6.  The Universal Flasher Relay replaces the stock flasher relay (PLUG 'n PLAY) and restores the DOT flash rate regardless of signal type (front, rear, left & right).  For more info on the Universal Flasher Relay select the link above.
