FAQ

Q1 The Dr X Kit replaces the electronics within the OEM Taillight?

A1 YES, the Dr X Kit circuit board directly replaces the board within the OEM taillight using same mounting holes and screws.

Q2 Are the BLUE LEDs legal?

A2 The BLUE LEDs are provided for trick highlights.  Users can toggle them ON/OFF on-the-fly (while riding) to avoid issues with local authorities.  There is also a BLUE LED override feature which will completely disable the BLUE LEDs.  The BLUE highlights are not offered in other colors.

Q3 Is the Dr X Kit DOT approved?

A3 The Dr X Kits are designed to MEET DOT specifications but are not approved or qualified for DOT use.  This is achieved by maintaining and exceeding manufacturer LED specifications for intensity, wavelength (color) and placement/count of LEDs.  In addition, the Dr X Kit installs within the OEM taillight housing for full optical compliance.

Q4 Is the Dr X Kit ZX-6R X-treme brighter than OEM?

A4 YES, the Dr X Kit ZX-6R X-treme uses the same type of SuperFlux LEDs as the OEM taillight but much much brighter.  The Dr X Kit LEDs are 5 to 10 times brighter than red LEDs typically found on other aftermarket kits.  The increased intensity improves contrast for increased rearward visibility and signaling intention.  Click here to view a comparison image...

Q5 Why not use YELLOW LEDs for L/R Signals?

A5 There are no requirements by law that signals must be YELLOW in North America.  In fact most domestic vehicles use red for rear signals.  From a safety perspective, LED intensity and ON/OFF contrast is the predominant factor for signal visibility and intention (not color).  The Dr X Kit ZX-6R X-treme employs red LEDs that are among the brightest on the market.  Each red LED has the equivalent light power of 10 or more yellow LEDs typically found on other aftermarket kits.

Q6 How is the lens cut and then reattached?

A6 VFX designers and technicians have developed specialized equipment and jigs to cut open each taillight.  This method ensures a professional cut with little or no damage to the lens or taillight body.  Once the electronics have been replaced, the lens is reattached using a specialized plastic adhesive specifically developed for the Dr X Kit series.  The plastic adhesive (VPAD-010) is durable and impermeable to elements such as water, gasoline, oil, road grime and temperature fluctuations.

VFX does not recommend the use of silicone to reattach the lens.  Silicone does not adhere to plastic well and will eventually compromise the integrity of the seal - leaving the electronics susceptible to the elements.

Q7 How do i hook up the alarm trigger wire?

A7 Locate a +12V constant output wire on your alarm system.  Most alarms dedicate an output wire for hook up to turn signals or a taillight.  Ensure that the output wire is capable of handling a 2.5 Amp load.  If current exceeds output rating use an external relay.

Q8 I have an undertail with integrated LEDs for turn signals.  Will they work with the Dr X Kit?

A8 YES. The Dr X Kit will work with aftermarket or OEM rear signals.  In fact the signal animations on the Dr X Kit follow the OEM flash rate so both the Dr X Kit and alternate signals with be synchronized.

Q9 Do i need to install the FX Switch up at the front?  Where do i mount it for the Z1000, Z750?

A9 The FX Switch can be mounted anywhere on the bike.  VFX recommends mounting up at the front for ON-THE-FLY operation of the Special effects.  For greater discretion the FX switch can be kept in the cargo area.  For the Z1000/Z750 users may mount the switch on the front dash panel.

Q10 If i remove the rear turn signals, will i encounter FAST FLASH?

A10 Removing/replacing your OEM turn signals may cause the flash relay to go into fast flash mode. When removing the OEM rear Turn Signals, the Dr. X Kit taillight will continue to animate L/R flash at the normal OEM rate (onboard software overrides the fast flash from relay). However, the front signal lights will continue to flash fast. This can be easily resolved by installing a FLASH EQUALIZER PRO Kit without replacing your OEM flash relay.

Q11 Why is the plastic RED inner lens removed? What is it for?

A11 The plastic red inner lens is used to scatter and filter light from the OEM LEDs more evenly. In order to maximize performance (animation sharpness) from the Dr X taillight the PNP DEFAULT is to remove this lens. This also allows for the use of the BLUE LEDs which the red lens would otherwise filter out. Performance and safety is not compromised by removing the inner lens as the Dr X Kit LEDs are DOT compatible for color.

The Dr X ZX-6R X-treme kit PLUG ‘n PLAY is also available with the inner red lens intact upon special request.
