FAQ
Q1 What makes the Sport Flasher Kit different from other universal integration/trailer kits? A1 Most integration/trailer kits are not designed to flash BOTH Park (low intensity) and Brake (high intensity) filaments in each light bulb. Instead, when you use a trailer kit the bulbs will flash only from low intensity to high intensity not FULL ON intensity to FULL OFF intensity, as does the Sport Flasher kit. Majority of riders agree that this feature is very important in order increase visibility (higher contrast) especially during the daytime. With the rear light bulbs placed so closely together, the light leakage (in the lens) from one side to the other is also greatly reduced with this approach giving you the extra edge when signaling. We’ve even encountered many trailer kits that cause Fast Flash problems due to interference with the operation of the OEM Flash Relay. The Sport Flasher Kit has been specifically designed with Solid State component to work with sport bike technology. In addition the module is housed in a ruggedized/waterproof package that will probably be the only thing that will survive a mondo crash! All of our kits are fully warranted and we offer the best support in the business…toll free one on one assistance.
Q2 Do I have to remove the Left/Right OEM Flashers for this kit to work? A2 NO. The Sport Flasher kit operates with or without your OEM L/R Flashers. This option is left up to you. You can also remount the OEM L/R Flashers at anytime if you change your mind. When using the Sport Flasher Kit with the OEM Flashers, your signaling visibility will be greatly increased both during the day and night.
Q3 I have just installed the kit and I have notice that my left and right signal lights are flashing rapidly. I think your Sport Flasher kit is malfunctioning…what’s the problem? A3 This problem is related to the type of turn signal bulbs/LEDs you have upgraded to. The OEM signal set-up on a bike uses a 20-30Watt bulb both in the front and rear. If you reduce the combined wattage of these turn signals you will violate the OEM set-up and cause the OEM Flash Relay to flash fast. Our kit does not affect the OEM flash rate. In order to cure this problem, VFX offers the Flash Equalizer PRO Kit. This dual channel device is essentially a load equalizer that works with your OEM Flash Relay to solve for fast flash.
Q4 I have just installed the Sport Flasher kit on my bike and I am absolutely certain the wiring is correct…yet when I flash either Left or Right both bulbs are flashing on and off! A4 This is a very common question. The cause of this is simply because you have not cut out the OEM connector feeding your taillights before you have done the install. This OEM connector is fed by the tail light harness coming from the front of the bike and then feeds the Brake and Park (constant +12V) signals to both rear bulbs. The OEM connector INTERNALLY ties left and right Park feeds together and left and right Brake feeds together. The Sport Flasher kit cannot command the Brake and Park filaments of each bulb individually unless this OEM connector’s INTERNAL “short” is broken. Therefore you must remove the OEM connector entirely and work with only the three flying wires (Brake, Park and Ground) coming from each bulb.
Q5 Why does your kit use heat shrink tubing to tie the wires together, why not use guillotine type clamping clips? A5 Clips do not offer a reliable enough connection since the blades of the clips need to pierce through the insulation of the wire and maintain constant pressure. Depending on the gauge and type of wire this solution usually causes malfunction down the road from the clips relaxing and oxidization. By stripping the wires back and then twisting them together there is far more contact area between the mating wires. Folding over the wire and then sealing the connection with heat shrink makes the electrical connection much less prone to oxidation since the heat shrink seals the entire connection. This solution also offers far better stress relief when the wires are under tension and it looks better too!
Q6 How can I determine the wire color codes for my bike? A6 In the support section we have a list of the wire color codes for certain models. If you do not find your model, you can purchase an automotive electric light tester and probe the wires for identification. Next, locate your rear tail harness where you plan to install the module and expose the wires and or connector. Connect the clip side of the tester to the negative battery terminal. With the probe side of the tester, probe the rear tail harness for all the signals with the bike accessories on. First press the brake on your bike and locate the wire that illuminates the tester light during this action. Now find the Park wire, your test light will illuminate immediately and stay on while the probe is touching the wire. Then in the same fashion locate the L and R flasher wires by turning on the corresponding signals. The ground of the harness is best located by taking the alligator clip of the tester and putting it on the positive post of the battery, then search with the probe the conductors until the test lamp illuminates constantly – that’s your ground return wire! Mark the colors down for your reference and continue with the install only after you turn the bike completely off.
